The Song Series

Working intuitively with color and line, pieces from the “Song” series were created over the course of a year with music as their driving factor. In each of the works, similar motifs can be found, showing a visual representation of habits and patterns. Throughout the course of creating an individual piece, titles were chosen through best pairing lyrics or song titles to the work.

This series evolved naturally over the period of a year. Through a tacit incorporation of music into the painting process, the body of work emerged relating to pieces that had special meaning in my life. The habits that I possessed created their own patterns on canvas, but were only allowed to surface when I let go of my inhibitions - something that doesn’t come as easy as I’d like.

Painting with music paved the way for unexpected gestural movements, which translated onto the canvas. I let go of the little voice in my head that controls my decisions and made way for the rhythm of the music to dictate my movement. When a piece was completed, song titles and lyrics were compared to the visual outcome to ultimately become the title for the art.

Music guides the body into spaces one wouldn’t normally venture. Gestural marks are visibly more fluid, natural and organic when working with music rather than without. Unbeknownst to me, the elements of a piece of music that I care about so deeply are found in the finished work.

Growing up, I was obsessed with becoming a pianist and a singer. Throughout this stage of my life, I realized how many aspects of music can relate to my life. When my focus shifted to painting, I found parallels between them. My love for music and painting both coexisted within me, with one inspiring the other.

Looking at this body of work now, I find my own self wondering how they came to fruition. I fondly look back at the initial layers of paint that were poured on the canvas and the accidental marks made throughout the process. All steps, no matter if they were intentional or not, were valuable and an essential part of the creation process. It is my hope that the viewer will also ponder the creative decisions and explore the journey of the paintings with me - how a piece starts and how it gets to where it needs to be.
